HUBBARD ONLINE DISPERSAL SOLID SUCCESS

HUBBARD DISPERSAL SALE RESULTS

By BEN HUDSON , TRACK Magazine Owner/Publisher

The on-line auction featuring the Thoroughbred horses involved in the R.D. Hubbard Complete Dispersal closed late Monday.  With an average of $29,370 on the 54 head, when coupled with a record average in this past weekend’s TQHA Yearling Sale it appears that 2020 could be a solid year for race horse sales in this part of the country.  The auction conducted by ThoroughbredAuctions.com featured horses of racing age, broodmares, yearlings and foals of 2020 plus New Mexico’s leading Thoroughbred sire Attila’s Storm.  With on-bids taken from July 21 through July 28, every one of the 54 head sold without reserve and grossed $1,586,000.

These horses that were all enrolled in the Accredited New Mexico-bred program were originally scheduled to sell during the Ruidoso New Mexico-bred Sale on August 21-22.

In early July when All American Ruidoso Horse Sales, LLC, elected to move its 2020 sales to Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, due to coronavirus restrictions in New Mexico, the decision was made to switch the Thoroughbred phase of the Hubbard Dispersal to the internet-based ThoroughbredAuctions.com. This outfit had earlier handled dispersals for Mike Weatherly and the later Henry Dominguez, both New Mexico-based owners and breeders.

The sale topper in the Hubbard Dispersal at $91,250 was the two-year-old Attila’s Storm gelding Aisle Runner, who is scheduled to run in the Rio Grande Senior Futurity at Ruidoso on August 16.

Ray Willis of Rafter W in Roswell, New Mexico, a long-time owner and breeder and an often times partner of Hubbard, was the buyer.

At $90,000, Attila’s Storm was the No. 2 seller. The 18-year-old reigning No. 1 Thoroughbred stallion in the New Mexico-bred program was purchased by Jimmy Vazquez and Scott Branson. A winner of $535,000, the son of Forest Wildcat has sired the earners of more than $11,000,000.

The No. 1 selling broodmare at $80,250 was the 12-year-old Bernardini mare Garter. Kelly Bownes of Alabama purchased Garter, who is in foal to Attila’s Storm.

Garter is the dam of Aisle Runner, the above-mentioned two-year-old that was purchased for $91,250 by Ray Willis.

Garter, who is a half-sister to European Champion Sprinter Stravinsky and Moscow Ballet, is also the dam of Go For A Stroll $414,000, Stormy Day $129,000 and Reception $46,000. All three of those are blacktype full siblings to the two-year-old purchased by Willis.

Garter’s dam is Fire The Groom, a Grade I winner of $723,000.

The No. 1 selling yearling at $62,250 was an Attila’s Storm filly out of the Dome mare Hang Glide. Jimmy Childs and J & SM, Inc., of Fort Stockton, Texas, teamed to buy the filly.

The No. 1 selling weanling at $55,250 is a full sister to the top selling yearling. Lori Owens of Abilene, Texas, was the buyer.

The top selling yearling and the top selling weanling are out of the $211,000 earning Dome mare Hang Glide.

Both of these fillies are full sisters to stakes winners Thermal $458,000, Reaper $376,000, Another Brother $240,000 and Flight Song $188,000 plus stakes placed winners Glide Path $52,000 and Hermano $77,000.

The 18 mares averaged nearly $21,000; the 15 horses of racing age averaged $38,550; the eight yearlings averaged $34,594 and the 12 foals of 2020 averaged $21,838.

Every horse entered was sold.

Twenty-six horses sold to Texas residents, with 17 going to New Mexico, four each to California and South Dakota and one each to Alabama, Iowa and Oklahoma.

Tom Goncharoff, who with his wife Leslie are long-time managers of Hubbards’s Crystal Springs Farm, told TRACK Magazine, “We are well pleased with the results. Quite frankly, we did not expect these horses to do quite as well as they did.

“In the days leading up to the auction, and even after the auction started, we had a steady stream of lookers at the farm. The interest in these horses is a great tribute to Mr. Hubbard and his breeding program.”

Lazy E Ranch is the agent for both the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse sections of the Hubbard Dispersal.

“When you think about the success of the Thoroughbred phase of this dispersal and the short amount of time that was available to switch it from a regular auction to an on-line auction, it is truly incredible,” said Lazy E’s Butch Wise.

“Shaun Hubbard’s decision to start this auction the day after the big New Mexico-bred Zia weekend at Ruidoso was a stroke of genius. And then the Hubbard horses backed up that decision by running really well on that program.”

“We were able to market this sale with banner ads on the in-house telecast at Ruidoso and on Q-racing.com and TRACK Magazine, stallionesearch and SPEEDHORSE also helped us get the word out. And we are using those same sources for the upcoming Phase II of the Hubbard Dispersal and all of the other horses selling on August 27-29 in the Lazy E Arena.”

Phase Two of the R.D. Hubbard Complete Dispersal is scheduled at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on August 27-28-29. This again includes weanlings, yearlings and horses of racing age plus a two shares in One Famous Eagle, a share in Valiant Hero and the Hubbard interest in Hes Relentless.

“Just like the Thoroughbreds, all of these horses will sell without reserve," Wise said.
